Alpaca– the fibre of the gods… Decadently soft, heavenly fluff – the ultimate in luxury spinning fibre!
This is the Space-Maker Promotion Pack Mono: Raw picked Huacaya Alpaca fibre for spinning @ R100.00 p/100 g! Eight colours to choose from, depending on stock. Black and grey extremely limited.
You can also order the Space-Maker Promotion Pack Mixed: a selection of 25 g of 4 raw Huacaya alpaca fibre colours for spinning @ R100.00 p/100 g! Randomly picked by us.
Or order the Space-Maker Promotion Suri blend: a blend of 80% Raw picked Huacaya fibre and 20% raw picked Suri fibre for spinning @ R150.00 p/100 g! Eight colours to choose from, depending on stock, Suri will be matched by us. Please state matching or contrast. Matching will be closest to picked colour but not necessarily a perfect match.
The picture above is of a 25 g skein hand-spun on a Turkish spindle in a gradient of 12 g natural white Huacaya spinning fibre ended with 12.5 g in a blend of 50/50 Huacaya/Suri spinning fibre which was then core-plied on the same spindle, leaving me with a 2-ply gradient skein consisting of one half just Huacaya alpaca and 50% of the skein consisting of 75% Huacaya and 25% Suri.
This was spun as part of my handspun-handknit shawl project which I will eventually feature on the Verlorevallei Alpacas & Fibrecrafts FB page once it is completed – https://www.facebook.com/Fibrewitch.
It is a slow and leisurely process, as I first had to spin another 25 g ball of 50/50 Huacaya/Suri for the second half of the scarf, and I have just spun another ball of yarn on a larger spindle because I needed 50 g for the edging (to be spun and plied in one sitting for consistency). I had to first dye the alpaca contrast – a lovely apricot to blend in with the above Huacaya and Suri blend, to which I have added a tad more brown alpaca and a smidge of mohair – for a bit more contrast…
Here’s a sneak peak of the WIP…
For those who wonder what to do with small amounts of fibre, THIS is what I do, and it adds magic to my creativity… Never mind a box of chocolates, try different blends of alpaca – you never know what you’ll end up getting. Best of all, you can change your mind along the way when you do your own blending!
Now why would I be going overboard selling my precious fibre for such a criminally low price?
It’s that time of the year!
Shearing season!
The delight of watching each fleece coming off, the excitement of collecting that fibre sample, checking the colour, crimp, staple length, and even nicer, comparing the different samples in the same batch, because that’s when you can clearly see how much difference there is between every alpaca, no 2 fleeces are EVER the same! The same animal’s fleece even differs from one year to the next!
Just a few of last year’s 12 sample bags. Some of those lovely fibres are still available, and we’re shearing again.
Yes, there’s one big drawback – storage space and time!
I can only process so much in washed and picked cloud, hand-carded rologs and bats, roving, rolags, spun fibre, knitted or crochet garments, and woven fabric!
Before any of that can be done, everything needs to be classed and stored neatly in colour and fibre type.
But space is limited and running out!
So this year, I decided to ‘embrace the season’ in more ways, and I decided to run a special promotion – calling it my ‘Space-maker Promotion Packs. I will probably repeat this every year around shearing time.
It happens to be in time for parrying with that horror time, ‘Black Friday’ Super Special Price Buster Punch-Packing Event that usually brings out the worst in people, and the drive to fill up Christmas stockings (it will have to be bulky ones to hold 100 g raw fibre!) or to pile up colourful wrapped gifts under the Christmas tree if you’re into the commercial slant of things, but even better, and more in my line of thinking, for making the stockings and/or a whole load of other special hand-made/spun/woven heirloom gifts for loved ones!
Or just treating yourself or a best friend! Remember to show this to your better half with instructions on colour preference, grams needed for your special project, and where to position your parcel for the great reveal:-)
I never imagined selling prime alpaca fibre for this low, but if I’m going to sort and store everything, AND launch my new Studio anytime soon, I have to make space by clearing out the excess of last year.
After all, I have loads of new fleeces coming home to roost…
For those new to the spinning game, 100 g alpaca fibre is quite a lot! The picture above shows around 25 g of raw fibre, and it’s spread equals about side plate size. Depending on the individual micron of the particular fleece, this may be more or less.
Please note, this will only be for huacaya fibre colours of which I have more stock than my minimum budgeted quantities to keep my website stocked responsibly for the next year, till the next shearing, and only as long as it takes me to get the levels to match those quantities, so unfortunately black and greys are VERY limited, and Suri will only be available if you order a blended pack – then I will add 20% Suri fibre in place of Huacaya fibre in a matching or contrast colour to complement your order.
Dare to be different, or just to indulge! Pick up your spindle, order your favourite colour alpaca, and why not invest in a super-nifty Little Gem spinning wheel – the MajaCraft Little Gem Spinning Wheel that will keep you coming back for more and more spinning time, even accompanying you to your Guild Spinning Meeting, neatly packed in its handy carry bag, and begin your endless journey down that magical path filled with creative ideas, each one opening the door to yet another master piece!
Order your packs here, stating the colour you would like, and we’ll try and match your request as close as possible:
- natural white
- light fawn
- medium fawn
- dark fawn
- light brown
- medium brown
- black – limited
- grey – limited
If you want a blended pack, containing Suri too, you can order it here too.
Please state whether you want a complement or contrast Suri colour. You can then do your own blending, and do what I do, add silk or dyed locks, other natural or dyed alpaca colours or merino, gotland, Blue Faced Leicester, Teeswater or Wensleydale locks, mohair or cashmere, whatever floats your boat!
And even more fun, if you want a mixed pack, go for 4 different colours of 25 g each, after all, 25 g goes a long way as my skein above shows! Colours will be picked based on stock levels.
Have fun creating!
